Birds of a Feather: Americas HPC Collaboration: Improving Continental Actions

Birds of a Feather: Americas HPC: Collaboration: Improving Continental Actions

19 November 2024

Tuesday 5:15 pm - 6:45 pm MST (1.5 hrs)

The SC24 edition of the Americas High-Performance Computing Collaboration Birds of a Feather will focus on improving continental actions to showcase collaborations from formal partnerships established since the initial edition at SC19. Collaboration opportunities with high-speed scientific networks and national laboratories from countries across the continent will be featured. This edition showcases the continental Networks of Research and Education (NRES): CANARIE, Internet2 and RedCLARA, and the expectations and experiences of collaboration in HPC supported by the NRES to grow the skills and actions of the continental research communities will be discussed. Additionally, during the BoF, the guidelines for an MoU between CANARIE, Internet2 and RedCLARA will be proposed to endorse the upcoming actions of America’s HPC Collaboration, including a continental consortium.

The expected outcomes of this BoF are as follows: First, an increase in continental actions will be observed with the support of CANARIE, Internet2 and RedCLARA. Second, formalize the Americas HPC Collaboration in a continental consortium, joining the three (3) main HPC actors in the continent: USA (represented by the ACCESS and DoE), Canada (Represented by Alliance Canada), and Latin America and the Caribbean (Represented by SCALAC).

The 2024 BoF Americas HPC Collaboration seeks to showcase collaboration opportunities and experiences between different HPC Networks and Laboratories from countries of the American continent. After the first meeting in SC’15 and SC’17, SC`19, organizers and attendees decided to develop the BoF year by year. In this SC24  BoF, we will show the results of the 2023/2024 activities in collaborative research and host a special panel with the three continental NRENs: CANARIE (Canada), Internet2 (USA), and RedCLARA (LAC).

Since its first edition, the BoF Americas HPC Collaboration has become the place to collaborate and share experiences between Institutes, Supercomputing Centers, Laboratories, Research Groups, scientific alliances, and Networks such as ACCESS, Alliance Canada, ORNL, ANL, Bridges, and SCALAC. Attendees from non-profit organizations, minorities, and diverse actors from academia and industry also participated. Last year, the BoF had more than 60 participants, and we expect to host a similar number of participants this year.

The expected outcomes of this BoF are described next:  First, to build on top of our previous discussions, an official Americas HPC Partnership, thanks to the interest shown by ACCESS, DOE HPC National Laboratories, Alliance Canada, and SCALAC, with special support of the NRENs: CANARIE, Internet2 and RedCLARA, that will boost the continental actions around advanced computing usage and research. Second, the identification of the critical points to develop an American roadmap following the experiences of other efforts, such as the case of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking presented at the SC23 BoF last year, and finally, the signature of an MoU to support the Advanced Computing Actions by RedCLARA, Internet2, and CANARIE.

About CANARIE

Session Format

The session will include a short presentation on 2023/2024 activities and a discussion panel with CANARIE, Internet2 and RedCLARA representatives. The panel will address the audience’s questions and comments as a strategy to involve them in the proposed activities, including proposing a MoU between CANARIE, Internet2 and RedCLARA.
